Environmental Justice (EJ) Program and Resources
In September 2011, Zender Environmental Health and Research Group was awarded an Environmental Justice Small Grant from EPA. In order to promote community-based participation and engagement into the decision-making process of environmental justice in regards to solid waste, Zender Group has committed to the following through this grant:
1) Conduct two 2.5-day Tribal Environmental Justice (EJ) Summits on Solid Waste Management to educate Tribal leaders and members on the adverse health and welfare effects of the release into the environment of material present in solid waste in their communities and the and methods to eliminate such effects;
2) Develop the Alaska Tribal EJ SWM: Beginning the Roadmap: this report will identify the needs, concerns, and potential next steps of Alaska Tribes, and voiced by Alaska Tribes, compiled primarily from Summit results with follow-up analysis and research work performed in conjunction with the EJ Committee;
3) Provide summit participants an EJ/SWM tool box of resources to assist Tribes with EJ pertaining to SWM.
Vision: The vision of environmental justice is rooted in the philosophy that solutions must rely on community-based participatory efforts. As such, we believe that conducting summits will promote this vision. We believe that our project will assist the EPA in achieving the goals and objectives set forth in the EJ 2014 Supporting Community-Based Action Programs Draft Implementation Plan, by fostering and building partnerships and/or workgroups as a result of our proposed summits.
